A Case Study

Improving shelf-level product verification, own-brand visibility, and planogram compliance through AI-powered shelf analysis.

Customer Profile

Our customer is a leading food manufacturing company based in the Middle East, specializing in the production and distribution of refined vegetable oils, ghee, and fat derivatives. With a focus on delivering quality food products, the company operates in a competitive market where effective product placement, shelf availability, and brand visibility are essential to retail performance. To strengthen shelf execution, Nexgen POG improved its AI Compliance capabilities with targeted enhancements focused on position-based product verification, clearer compliance reporting, and improved shelf-image analysis.

The Business Challenge

The customer needed greater visibility into actual shelf conditions and a more accurate way to verify product placement against approved planograms. Measuring total products against own-brand or own-category products was essential for evaluating on-shelf availability (OSA) and understanding shelf-space utilization.

Effective compliance verification required more than detecting products in shelf images. The customer needed accurate product- and shelf-level comparisons, position-based verification, facings-based compliance calculations, focused shelf image analysis, and clear compliance reports to identify discrepancies and evaluate overall shelf performance.

Solution Through Nexgen POG

Nexgen POG implemented targeted enhancements to AI Compliance Check in its production environment, strengthening how shelf images are analyzed and how planogram compliance results are calculated and presented. Enhanced AI Compliance Check in its production environment to make shelf verification more structured, transparent, and accurate. The solution compares an uploaded shelf image with the corresponding approved planogram, helping users evaluate actual product placement against the intended shelf arrangement.

The AI-powered analysis generates a compliance score and highlights discrepancies such as missing, extra, and misplaced products. Visual markers on the shelf image help users identify areas requiring attention, while section-wise progress indicators provide an overview of compliance across different shelf sections. This reduces reliance on manual shelf-by-shelf comparisons and makes compliance results easier to review.

The solution introduced the following key improvements:

  • UPC-Wise and Shelf-Wise Summary: Displays product-level discrepancies and overall shelf compliance.
  • Facings-Based Calculation: Calculates compliance scores based on total product facings.
  • Position-Based Comparison: Verifies product placement against the approved planogram.
  • Shelf Image Cropping: Focuses analysis on relevant shelf areas for accurate comparison.
  • OSA and Own-Brand Analysis: Measures shelf availability and own-brand or category representation.

Together, these enhancements make AI Compliance Check more structured, transparent, and aligned with the customer's shelf-verification requirements.

Results & Impacts

The AI Compliance Check enhancements provide a stronger foundation for monitoring shelf execution and evaluating planogram accuracy. The key expected operational benefits include:

  • Improved compliance visibility: UPC-wise and shelf-wise summaries make it easier to identify discrepancies and review compliance results at different levels.
  • Facings-based compliance assessment: Calculating the overall score using product facings provides a more detailed approach to evaluating shelf execution.
  • More focused image analysis: The cropping feature helps users concentrate on the relevant shelf area when submitting images for compliance checks.
  • Better support for OSA analysis: Comparing total shelf products with own-brand or own-category products supports the customer's goal of evaluating availability and brand representation.
